Keeping track of your heating oil supply is really very simple. It’s all about knowing where to find your tank gauge and how to read it.
Your heating oil tank gauge is typically found on top of the tank. It appears as a clear glass or plastic cylinder with a floating marker that indicates the oil level. The markings on the gauge usually include “F” (Full), “3/4,” “1/2,” “1/4,” and “E” (Empty). The floating marker tells you the approximate amount of oil left. For example, if the marker is at “1/2,” your tank is half full.

To avoid running out of fuel, it’s best to schedule a heating oil delivery when the gauge’s level is approaching 1/4 full. Waiting too long could leave you scrambling, particularly during extreme cold spells when demand is high, and delivery queues are longer.
