  • Traditional storage tank water heaters — These are the products that people tend to imagine when they think of a water heater. A storage tank of water is heated for distribution throughout the home. Traditional water heaters are often the most affordable option, but since they reheat unused water frequently, they can have higher operational costs.
  • Indirect-fired water heaters — These products do not use their own burner to heat water. Instead, they use a coil heated by the water from your boiler to warm up an insulated hot water tank. (Your boiler water does not come into contact with the water heater tank.) When you pair an indirect-fired water heater with a high-efficiency boiler, you can enjoy some of the lowest-cost hot water possible.
  • Tankless water heaters — Also called on-demand water heaters, these compact systems use a powerful gas flame but only heat water when you turn on a hot water fixture or appliance. They have significant benefits. The DOE found that tankless products can be up to 34% more efficient than traditional water heaters. They also have a much longer life span than traditional units and generate practically endless hot water as needed.
